This portrait, by an anonymous painter probably from The Netherlands in the 17th Century, depicts [[Guide_to_Homer|Homer]]. In his right hand is held a sheet of paper with Latin text of the names of cities which have claimed Homer as a native. Of course none of the works attributed to Homer were written down for generations, and they were around long before Latin or paper came onto the scene.
